The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering provides opportunities for graduate work leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. As the highest academic degree offered, it is awarded upon the completion of a program of advanced study and significant original research, design, or development in a very wide range of mechanical engineering topics. Some of them are the following: mechanics of materials, polymer technics, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermal engineering, machine and industrial product design, manufacturing, mechatronics. Regular courses are given by the professors of the University and scientists of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Research is carried out under the leadership and help of an academic supervisor. As a rule, theoretical and/or advanced experimental work is carried out which results should be regularly published in highly cited international scientific papers.

The goals of the Faculty’s postgraduate PhD programs are:

• to train creative, inventive mechanical engineers who can apply the engineering skills and the knowledge they have gained from the natural sciences on a state-of-the-art level; and

• to foster the development of leaders in engineering research and development.
